Monday Night IBD: Introduction to SAIA

Jul 2022 | Events

February 2022

The last decade has seen a steep increase in IBD cases in non-western populations, especially within the South Asian community. South Asians account for 25 per cent of the world’s population. This adds significantly to the global IBD disease burden. In South Asia, arriving at an IBD diagnosis is complicated by other conditions that mimic IBD such as tuberculosis.

Recent research has also found that South Asian patients with IBD tend to have a more aggressive disease course and there is a greater prevalence of perianal fistulizing IBD among South Asians. However, the unique needs and challenges of the South Asian community have gone unrecognized in global conversations on IBD management.

This MNIBD conversation highlighted the healthcare disparities in the South Asian community and focused on research efforts, diagnostic challenges & patient experiences of living with IBD.
