Sociocultural Considerations for Food-Related Quality of Life in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, coauthored by Tina Aswani-Omprakash & Neha D. Shah, RD, amplifies mental health and cultural factors around food and dietary practices in communities of color living with GI disorders. In sharing her lived experience as a patient with #IBD, #gastroparesis, #IBS and #SIBO, Tina highlighted many of the diet disparities, financial challenges of enteral nutrition as well as the cultural identity crisis created by not relating to the foods presented to her in her care. Neha and Tina emphasized much of the research done already and built upon it for both authors to say together that it’s time for more research and greater cultural competency in diet and nutrition recommendations related to GI disorders in order to improve Food Related Quality of Life (FRQoL) and overall patient outcomes.

At SAIA, we endeavor to push the bounds of research that already exists and advance it to ensure that minority communities are being represented. As #IBD continues to grow in the #SouthAsian community worldwide, it is imperative that we take a stance to expand research and cultural competency for the community’s needs to be met.
