SAIA’s Research Committee is proud to have collaborated with researchers from Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine on this important systematic review. This is the first publication to comprehensively review IBD across all domains in South Asia.
Our scoping review indicates that IBD phenotype, natural history, and complications in South Asia are not dissimilar from those in North America and Europe, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis, risk stratification, and appropriate, timely treatment.
There is a pressing need for effective IBD therapies to be made available in countries in South Asia, and in LMICs in general, at low cost. Similarly, there is an urgent need to conduct more clinical trials in South Asia so as to advance science in this region, as well as to understand the efficacy of these medications in patients from this demographic.
